Netiquette and Messaging Etiquette


In every field in this world, people are expected to behave in appropriate way that can be accept by others people around them. Since the internet has turn to a new type of community that uses new form of communication, we as a netizen (people that are consider as internet community who use internet in daily life activities) should know the acceptable behavior rules and guideline. These rules of netiquette will make your life and other netizens on the Net become easier.

Here is the list of netiquette that a netizen should follow to ensure that they will have excellent communication via messaging in cyber world:

  1. Say what you mean, and say it with care. After you send something electronically, there is no way to call it back. So, you must to compose your message carefully, and make sure it means what you intend it to mean. If you’re replying to a message, double-check the heading to ensure you reply is going to those people you want to receive your message. Even your took only a few second to type your message, it may be broadcast far and wide and be preserve forever in online archives.
  2. Keep it short. Include a descriptive subject line and limit the body to screen or two. If you’re replying to long message, include the copy or relevant part of the message, but not the whole message. Remember that many people receive hundreds of e-mail messages each day, and they’re more likely to reads and respond to short ones.
  3. Proofread your messages. A famous New Yorker cartoon by Peter Steiner shows one dog telling another, “On the Internet no one knows you a dog”. You may not judge by the color of your hair or the clothes that you wear when you are positioning messages, but that doesn’t mean appearances aren’t important. Other people will judge your intelligence and education by the spelling, grammar, punctuation and clarify of your messages. If you want your messages to be taken seriously, present your best face.
  4. Don’t assume that you are anonymous. Your messages can say a lot about you. You might not realize that people can judge you just by reading your messages because you sometimes will tell a little bit about yourself unconsciously. So, beware that you must notice that people might know you and you should strictly react in appropriate manners.
  5. Learn the “nonverbal” language of the Net. In communication, tone and body language is very important so that our audience can interpret what we mean in correct way. Because of that, online communities have developed text-based or graphical substitutes, sometimes call emoticons. Emoticons actually help people on expressing their actual feeling in Net.
  6. Know your abbreviations. Nowadays, peoples prefer to use shorthand for many phrases. Thus, knowing the meaning of abbreviation will save your time and help you understand the text message that you receive.
  7. Keep you cool. Many timid people seem to pretend to be somebody else when they appear online and those people usually lying when they communicate with others netizen. In reality, there is nothing wrong on expressing your emotions, but broadside attacks and half-truths can do seriously damage your relationship to your online relationship. Online or off, freedom of speech is a right that carries responsibilities
  8. Don’t be a source of spam. That is too easy to send multiple copies of email messages that it’s attempting to broadcast too widely. Target your message carefully: if you are telling about message that involve particular person, you should sent the message just to people that participate with that event such as you should give email to your nearest friends if you want invite them to come to your house instead mail your message to all your friends list.
  9. Say no to spam. People send spam because it gets result – mouse clicks to Web links, email replies, purchases and more. If you want to do your part to wipe out spam, never reward spammer with your time or money.
  10. Give something back. The internet includes an online community of volunteers who answer beginner questions, archives files, moderate newsgroups, maintain public servers and provide other helpful services. If you appreciate their work, tell them in words and show them in actions; do your part to help others in the internet community.
In conclusion, it is vital to netizan to follow netiquette when they are communicates through online. It is vital in order to make sure that people that interact with us will be pleasant with our attitudes and keep our relationship in a good condition and will last forever. Not only that, it also important to the community so that there are some respects and trust.
